Cheap Trick CT 224 Sub / Sat System by Monacor as in Klang+Ton 3/06

CT 224 Sat aus Zeitschrift K+T 3/2006

- impedance: 8 Ohm
- sensitivity (2.83V/1m): 84 dB
- frequency range(-8dB): 150 - 24 000 Hz
- crossover frequency: 2700 Hz
- speaker type: closed cabinet
CT 224 Subwoofer data:
- size (HxWxD): 20 x 20 x 22 cm
- impedance: 2x 8 Ohm
- sensitivity (2.83V/1m): 84 dB
- frequency range(-8dB): 51-300 Hz
- speaker type: bass reflex
The CT 224 is quite a slim satellite - subwoofer system, also called Challenge MK III Sat / Sub by Monacor. This system is suitable for smaller rooms and consists of Monacor / Number One drivers.

The system comprises a small satellite containing the reasonably priced but excellent 25 mm DT-25N fabric dome tweeter and the full range driver SPH-30X/8 with kevlar diaphragm.

The subwoofers uses two Monacor SPP-110/8 bass drivers. In the original version the shielded SPP-110/8S bass driver has been used, but it's no longer available. The subwoofer is passive with a built-in crossover between subwoofer and satellite. Therefore, the amp and the satellites may be connected to the 8 terminals of the subwoofer.

Excerpt of the Klang+Ton review:

CT 224 Sub aus Zeitschrift K+T 3/2006 ... "The subwoofer was placed right next to the left satellite. This was entirely sufficient for a well balanced sound, without even a hint of the sound leaning to the left. We really liked the addition of the sub to the (otherwise) thin sounding satellites; the combination performed like a uniform and integrated whole. The Challenge Set scored with beautiful and unobtrusive high frequency details. This will particularly please those who are not too fond of full range driver sound. Staging was wide and well structured. We didn't object to the instruments' placement, even without having a point source. With regard to vividness the set does a good job, not soft or lame, but with vigour and commitment. As expected, the listener has to forgo real low bass and the sub reaches its limitations at higher volumes. When placed correctly in our listening room, our first impressions were confirmed: musical enjoyment at the highest level and perfectly suited for series listening. Particularly good was the sound when the listening position was not more than two and a halve metres away from the speakers. At this distance the speakers displayed the best three-dimensionality and the volume is sufficient. Only the wiring-up of the satellites according to the crossover diagram is not to our liking. We'll take this opportunity to give you a popular hint: the correct wiring-up of a sub / sat systems depends on the placement of the speakers. Therefore, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Adhering to instruction manuals down to the last detail doesn't often give the results required. Just trusting your ears." ...

CT 224, High-end version

If you prefer the kit to come with higher quality components we'll gladly offer suggestions. However, the modification with the most noticeable improvement is placing a 15 μF MKP capacitor in parallel to 220 μF capacitor of the subwoofer. Without this additional capacitor the entire frequency range will be reproduced by the satellite using an etched ELCO. This will negatively affect transparency and precision.

We, therefore, recommend one additional capacitor per satellite:

MKP capacitor 15 μF/400 V (2 units are needed) - not available
